Working in a soup kitchen is always a gratifying experience, from the look of appreciation on a patrons face to the simple humble thank you that you know means so much. But one thing stuck with me, that I hadn't thought of before. In the kitchen where we worked was a list of "8 reasons to serve the homeless," all taken from bible verses. Now this was a rather severely religious group, but it did make me realize that all of the soup kitchens I have served in the past, and really about 95% of the community service I've done or seen done, was organized by a Christian group.
Now of course the bible is about the greatest motivator there is for a Christian, but what about everyone else? What can we do to motivate those, like myself, for whom extremely religious surroundings are a turn off? Now I can't argue that a lot of good is done by every group, especially the one we served with yesterday; but I truly believe everyone should be involved in community service regularly, and that religion mustn't be related to it. Maybe secular options could get many more people involved in serving, and maybe even more people in need to be comfortable reaching out for help.
